Preparing for International Volunteering

copyright Hannah SheppardThis course offers the opportunity to discuss, think through and plan for voluntary project work in Africa, highlight potentially challenging issues both in Africa and Wales that links commonly have to deal with, and useful strategies for problem solving with community link partners.

It is ideal for the new project or newer volunteers, and for more experienced volunteers who are leading a team and training/briefing people who are new to development.

The course will:

  • give a brief overview of the context and history of development
  • outline some desirable qualities for an individual thinking about volunteering in international development, and will ask you to share your own expectations
  • discuss differences in culture between two communities and share strategies for different cultures working together
  • apply theories of change to example scenarios relating to previous international development projects
  • suggest appropriate strategies for reflective practice and briefly describe why this is helpful

The next training session will be coming soon.
